How to Get to Gökçeada

The only practical way to reach Gökçeada is by ferry — and the good news is that the crossing itself feels like part of the holiday. On this page we've gathered the ferry options, the finer points of bringing a car across, and directions from the major cities.

Getting there by ferry

Kabatepe – Kuzulimanı (main route)

The main ferry route to Gökçeada departs from Kabatepe Harbour on the Gallipoli Peninsula and arrives at the island's Kuzulimanı pier. The crossing takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. The ferries carry both passengers and vehicles; sailings are more frequent in summer and scale back in winter.

The route is operated by GESTAŞ. For current timetables and online tickets, we recommend checking GESTAŞ's official website (gestasdenizulasim.com.tr) — the schedule changes with the season, so we don't publish a fixed timetable here. Tickets are priced in TL (Turkish lira).

Çanakkale – Gökçeada

There are also sailings from Çanakkale town to Gökçeada; this route is longer and its frequency varies by season. It's worth considering if you're travelling without a car and staying in Çanakkale — otherwise, the Kabatepe route is almost always more practical.

Should you bring a car?

We wholeheartedly recommend it. The island's villages and beaches are spread over a wide area, and most of the coves are hard to reach without one. You have two options:

• Bring your own car across: The most comfortable option. In summer, and especially over public holidays, vehicle queues can build up — buy your ticket online in advance and arrive at the harbour early.
• Rent on the island: Cross on foot and rent a car, scooter or ATV on the island. Demand is high in summer, so book ahead.

In summer there are also minibus (dolmuş) services between the town centre and some villages and beaches, but the timetable is limited — if you'd rather not plan your days around the ferry and the minibus, a car is the freest option.

Directions from the big cities

From İstanbul

İstanbul – Tekirdağ – Keşan – Gelibolu, then towards Eceabat and on to Kabatepe Harbour. The drive takes about 4.5–5 hours (excluding breaks). With the ferry, plan on a total journey of 6–6.5 hours. If you're coming by coach, there are lines to Çanakkale or Eceabat, with onward connections to Kabatepe.

From İzmir and Çanakkale

İzmir to Çanakkale is about 4 hours; cross the strait via the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge or by ferry, then follow the Eceabat–Kabatepe road to the harbour. From Çanakkale town, Kabatepe is about 1 hour away.

By plane

Gökçeada has a small airfield, but there are no regular scheduled flights. The nearest realistic options are flying to Çanakkale Airport, or flying into İstanbul and continuing by road.

Once you're on the island

From the Kuzulimanı pier, the drive to the town centre takes about 10 minutes. Casa Verano is 5 minutes from the pier and 3 from town — a quarter of an hour after rolling off the ferry, you could be sitting on the terrace facing the sunset. Thanks to lockbox self check-in, arriving on a late ferry is no problem at all.

Practical tips

• On summer weekends and public holidays, buy your ferry ticket in advance, as a return.
• On days with very strong wind, sailings can occasionally be cancelled; don't tie your departure day too tightly to a flight or an important commitment.
• If you're crossing with a car, the vehicle queue is separate from the ticket queue; arrive at the harbour at least 45–60 minutes before departure.
• If you arrive in the evening, do your grocery shopping in the town centre; the villages have limited options.
